Five metalcasting executives earn foundry management awards from AFS.

Five leading executives from the U.S. metalcasting industry were given foundry industry management awards at the AFS Foundry Executive Management Conference on September 13-16 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

AFS presents the awards each year to individuals who have demonstrated management expertise in operating their companies while making significant contributions to both their companies and AFS.

The following individuals received Industry Service Citations this year:

* Don Doss, president, Metal Dynamics Corp., Tulsa, Oklahoma, for his service to the industry and its associations. He served as a director for the Non-Ferrous Founders' Society and twice as its president. In 1983, he was elected to the board of the Cast Metals Federation and served as its chairman prior to its merger with the National Foundry Assn. Doss also spent four years on the board of the AFS Cast Metals Institute. Throughout his career, he has repeatedly displayed dedication to foundry management, government affairs and education.

* Vickie Van Steenberge, president, Lodi Iron Works, Lodi, California, who throughout her career advanced the cause of the foundry industry by her leadership and personal involvement in AFS, the California Cast Metals Assn. and the former American Cast Metals Assn. (ACMA). She represents a pioneering woman, actively pursuing dedication to the metalcasting industry. She continues to be an example to other females by participating in activities that will help make the metalcasting industry a better place for future generations--particularly for women.'

* James T. Williams, retired vice president of Grede Foundries, Inc., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who has served the industry in various capacities for more than 42 years. He was instrumental in enhancing the industry's public image by taking a leadership role in efforts to comply with strict environmental regulations and requirements. Williams also has served the AFS Wisconsin Chapter in several positions, including chairman. He has been active in the Wisconsin Cast Metals Assn. and the national affairs of AFS.

Also honored was Eugene Langner, retired vice president and works manager of American Cast Iron Pipe Co., Birmingham, Alabama. He received the William J. Grede Award, which recognizes those who have made major contributions in management, marketing and education.

After starting his career as a metallurgical engineer in the smelting department, he continued to serve American Cast Iron Pipe for 40 years as general foreman, assistant superintendent, assistant works manager, vice president and works manager, and as a member of the board of directors.

Langner also is past chairman of the AFS Birmingham Chapter, a member and chairman of the AFS Research Board; a former AFS director (class of 1988); a trustee of the Foundry Educational Foundation; and a director, vice president and president of the Alabama Cast Metals Assn.

The final honoree at this year's conference was Carl Weigell, chairman, Motor Castings Co., Milwaukee, who received the 1992 James P. Keating/Founders' Freedom Award.

The annual award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the foundry industry and who have shown active participation in government affairs, human resource management, safety and health, and education.

In addition to AFS, Weigell has served the Gray & Ductile Iron Founders Society, Iron Casting Society, National Foundry Assn. and ACMA. He also has been a spokesman for the metalcasting industry before state and national legislators.
