Five Minds for the Future

by Howard Gardner Howard Gardner, born on July 11, 1943 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is a psychologist who is based at Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is best known for his theory of multiple intelligences[0]. School leaders must constantly balance today's needs with those of the future. In that process, we're challenged to prepare young people for a world we may not fully comprehend. Howard Gardner, the noted Harvard educator and creator of multiple-intelligences theory, applies his thinking and insight to help today's leaders by identifying five abilities that successful people must exhibit.

A conceptual framework is used in research to outline possible courses of action or to present a preferred approach to a system analysis project.
 identifies these five "minds" as ways of thinking, behaving and performing in our rapidly evolving global society. Starting with the Disciplined Mind, he affirms the need for young people to develop mastery in major schools of thought like science, mathematics, history and philosophy. Gardner then describes the Synthesizing Mind and the Creating Mind as linking and utilizing the Disciplined Mind's knowledge to adapt and build new applications.

Gardner explores the role of teachers and the school system in building the skills and talents of young people to mature in each of these minds. He recognizes the valuable role that educators play as models and coaches to youth in this process, but affirms that "the burden of education must be shared by parents, neighbors, the traditional and digital media, the church, and other communal institutions."
