H. L. Mencken, in his explorations into American linguistic usages once pointed out that "to get religion" was an American coinage. In traditional societies, particularly in the Europe from which so many United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  citizens came, one inherited religion. It came with the genes or the territory. It resulted in doctrinal changes and influenced social and political thought.  of the 1740s, the main way in which most people "got religion" was through personal experience, often of emotional, sometimes of extreme expressions.

Some of the gotten religions were direct heirs of European faiths. But for whites and African-Americans alike, it turned out that most of these faiths had to undergo transformations west of the Atlantic. The official culture did not favor a single set of symbols and transmit them through formal inherited institutions. Instead, someone would ride into town on a horse, call into question the staid and stuffy ways of establishment ministers and cold-fish parishioners, and, through rhetoric and devices, create drama that led to writhings, barking, swooning swoon

Thus the Anglicans-turned-Episcopalians adapted slowly and slightly in the colonies, while the new Methodists, who eventually broke with mother-Anglicanism, worked the experiential front more efficiently. Among African-Americans, limited by the demand by Presbyterians and Congregationalists for an educated ministry and for adherence to discreet and often prim approaches, it was those Methodists and Baptists who encouraged emotional responses and diverse experiences. Where these inherited denominations did not contain all the "enthusiasm"--a key word in the first chapter of the book here under review--others came along with extravagant effervescences. Among these were spiritualists, who encourage seances; Adventists, who looked to an early end to the world as known; Pentecostals, who spun off from the "holiness" wing of Methodism when that movement turned somewhat stale; Quakers and Shakers and importers of Theosophy theosophy (thēŏs`əfē) [Gr.,=divine wisdom], philosophical system having affinities with mysticism and claiming insight into the nature of God and the world through direct knowledge, philosophical speculation, or some physical process.  found their place.

The stories of many of these have been told in discrete narratives; what we have lacked until now are histories that ask what, for all their maverick character, these have in common. Couple the response to that lack with the need to attempt some explanations, particularly of the "why here?" and "why now?" and "why this form?" character, and you have made room for the new book by Professor Ann Taves. It is a pioneering work in an emerging field of inquiry. It will help resituate inquiries about religion toward the center of American historical research, and bring emphasis to one dimension of religion that has always fallen somewhere between the desks of historians and psychologists. Taves picked the right moment, or helped produce it.

Fits, Trances, & Visions is evidence of a trend that sees a reduction in tension among choices on the part of American historians. Ann Taves is at home with both poles in a variety of polarities, and subtly negotiates among them.

Thus the sharp division that has produced much conflict in the profession between "narrative" and "theory" is much reduced in Professor Taves's work. Must one determine whether to treat the past as only a set of "social constructions of reality" or can one propose that there is some sort of approachable reality behind the constructions? The author of Fits, Trances, & Visions is highly aware of the issues that went into the debate behind that question, but is not stunned stun

, or does it have its place alongside consideration of "events"? Taves treats successive unfoldings of emotions as events, and thus contributes to another form of synthesis. Should one concentrate on political history, full of documentable events as it is, or should one deal with social history and the daily doings of people who do not seem to "make history" or shape events? Taves treats both, by visiting the religious awakenings that did have political consequences, for exampl e after the Great Awakening and before the American Revolution American Revolution, 1775–83, struggle by which the Thirteen Colonies on the Atlantic seaboard of North America won independence from Great Britain and became the United States. It is also called the American War of Independence. .

Atop all these are questions having to do with how one relates the secular to the religious in writing such as this. Can the historian at home in the secular academy do justice to, or even "appreciate"--a technical term among some religion scholars--religious impulses, or must she necessarily engage in reductionism reductionism(rē·dukˑ·sh·niˑ·z ? Conversely, can an historian surrounded by believers, those who practice religion, acquire distance to deal equitably with secular understandings or, as Taves's subtitle suggests, "explaining" religious experience? I stress all these polarities, sometimes assumed and sometimes explicitly dealt with in this book, to suggest the complicatedness of Taves's task and to indicate something of the sophistication so·phis·ti·cate

 graduate school of theology that had Methodist roots and more likely because Methodism, so neglected by historians in recent decades, offers such appropriate case studies, devotes due attention to it, sometimes to the neglect of equally illuminating instances. By a law of compensation, h owever, this approach works out well. There have been far more historical studies of Mormons than Methodists, perhaps even of the few Shakers than of the millions of Methodists, yet one must ask: who tells more about "fits, trances, and visions" in American religion than a group that generated so many ecstasies and enthusiasms--and then turned out to be so mainstream?

Despite some lapses into jargon, Taves for the most part concentrates on telling good stories; call some of them anecdotes and you will not detract from detract from

Along the way, serving as a bonus for story-minded readers and as the meat and heart of the book to those who are trying to locate some meanings in the web of religious experiences, is the author's consistently judicious and informative application of theoretical tools that in less competent hands are artificial impositions and distractions.

Fits, Trances, & Visions is certain to find its place not only as a sign of new times in historical writing in this area and as a skein of good stories but as a permanent contribution to study of religious experience. And both in popular speech and in formal studies, Americans by and large have come to recognize that one learns more about this nation and its people when studying religious behavior and experience than when concentrating on dogma, doctrine, and polity.
