Fitel Debuts New Line of Uncooled Coaxial DFB & FP Laser Diodes.

Business Editors

CLINTON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--November 27, 2001

Fitel Technologies, Inc., in a move that will expand their signaling product line, today announced the availability of a series of new low-cost, uncooled coaxial Distributed Feedback (DFB DFB

acronym for dark, firm, dry meat. Called also dark cutting beef.
) and Fabry Perot (FP) Laser Diode A semiconductor-based laser used to generate analog signals or digital pulses for transmission through optical fibers. Both laser diodes and LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are used for this purpose, but the laser diode generates a smaller beam that is easier to couple with the smaller core  Modules for telecomm and datacomm transmission in intermediate to long-haul networks.

The design enables extremely low power consumption and small mounting size due to the absence of a thermoelectric ther·mo·e·lec·tric   also ther·mo·e·lec·tri·cal

 cooler (TEC).

The suite of four DFB modules and one FP, which vary in power from 0.05mW to 1.6mW, are available in three different package designs: MF Pigtail A cable that has an appropriate connector on one end and loose wires on the other. It is designed to patch into an existing line or to terminate the ends of a long run. Contrast with patch cord.  module, RC module, and LC module. All are compliant with Telcordia reliability tests.

"We've put a great amount of focus on the signaling market because we're seeing greater demand for such intermediate and long-reach products," explained Gerry Bezems, VP of Sales and Marketing. "We have a high degree of confidence in what we're producing because, much like our higher power cooled DFBs, these products are based on the proven strength of the Furukawa III-IV compound Indium Phospate (InP) laser chip design."

The M1 and M2 series uncooled DFB modules, which are available in 1310nm, 1510nm, and 1550nm, are designed for intermediate and long-haul use. The MX series is designed for Course Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM.

systems, or CWDM (Course WDM) An optical transmission method that is used for shorter distances than dense WDM (DWDM). Also known as "wide WDM," CWDM transmits fewer channels and uses wider spacing between the channels for distances up to 60 km. Wider spacing up to 25 nm, compared to 1. , and is available from 1470 to 1610nm. All the DFB modules operate at speeds up to 2.5Gpbs The FP laser diode module, which is available in 1310nm, is for intermediate use and supports SONET/SDH and Fiber-in-the-loop (FITL FITL Fiber-In-The-Loop (telecommunications)

) compliant links for speeds up to 622Mbps.

Fitel Technologies and Furukawa have a strong history and expertise in developing and manufacturing laser diode modules, and currently hold nearly 70% of the total market share for 14xx pump lasers. Furukawa has maintained its position as a top manufacturer of pump lasers by leveraging the production capacity at its facility in Chiba, Japan.

Fitel Technologies, Inc., is a wholly owned company that develops and markets a wide variety of fiber optic and optoelectronics solutions by The Furukawa Electric Company, Ltd., of Japan.
