No. 8 South hung with Fitchburg for the first half, but the Red Raiders' experience allowed them to pull away in the second half and win the Division 1 boys' basketball quarterfinal 67-50 at the Doug Grutchfield Field House.

"I thought we played better as the game went on," Fitchburg coach Paul DiGeronimo said. "Our athleticism took over in the second half, and I thought we did a great job finishing in the transition. In the second half we came out re-energized."

The Red Raiders (20-3) move on to the semifinals against No. 5 North at 7:45 p.m. Sunday at WPI WPI - Worcester Polytechnic Institute . The Colonels finished 13-9.

Fitchburg led, 27-26, with two minutes left in the first half. The Red Raiders increased that margin to 34-27 at the break. South managed to score just eight points in the quarter and only two field goals. Those scoring woes continued in the third. A trey from sophomore Hugh Daye (15 points) was South's only hoop of the quarter. South scored just six points in the frame, the rest coming on free throws by junior Emmanuel Feraud (15 points). Meanwhile, Fitchburg was converting its shots down the other end of the floor, mostly on fast-break opportunities. A pair of buckets from Adam Vasquez and a 3-pointer by Tralane Whittle as part of a 9-2 run had the Red Raiders entering the final quarter on top 47-33.

"We've got a lot of young kids so we've got to pay our dues," South coach Pat Williams said. "Fitchburg is a good team. We had our chances but there isn't much you can do about it when their talent and our inexperience Inexperience

"These kids know each other so well that they started doing the things to create their own offense," DiGeronimo said. "It's something they've been doing for a long time. And tonight was a result of these kids having been around each other for a long time. The kids wanted to win tonight and you could see it, especially in the second half. It's a one-game season now and that's the approach you have to take."
