Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002

Fitch Ratings Fitch Ratings

An international rating agency for financial institutions, insurance companies, and corporate, sovereign, and municipal debt. Fitch Ratings has headquarters in New York and London and is wholly owned by FIMALAC of Paris.
upgraded the long-term and short-term ratings of United California Bank (UCB UCB - University of California at Berkeley ) and affirmed its individual and support ratings following the acquisition of UCB by BancWest Corporation (BWE BWE Best Week Ever (TV show)
BWE Bundesverband Windenergie eV (German Wind Energy Association)
BWE Ballast Water Exchange
BWE Braunschweig Germany (airport code)
), a subsidiary of BNP Paribas BNP Paribas (Euronext: BNP, TYO: 8665 ) is one of the main banks in Europe and France. It was created on 23 May 2000 through the merger of Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) and Paribas. , from UFJ UFJ United Financial of Japan (bank)
UFJ Upper Flex Joint
Bank, Ltd. of Japan. The ratings of BWE and its subsidiaries have been affirmed and the Rating Outlook remains Positive. (See below for a complete list of ratings). The Rating Outlook for BWE remains Positive as it is owned by the higher rated BNP BNP B-type natriuretic peptide, brain natriuretic peptide Physiology A 32-residue peptide hormone produced predominantly in the ventricles, secreted in response to fluid overload–eg, CHF. See Atrial natriuretic peptide.  (Short-term F1+ and Long-term AA). Additionally, while our ratings of BWE reflect the support of its parent, they also reflect the regional diversity of BWE's franchise, its sound financial condition and its generally improving earnings performance.

UCB is expected to be merged into BWE's bank subsidiary, Bank of the West, at the end of 1Q02. UCB is expected to be beneficial to BWE and BNP Paribas due to the possible synergies to be derived from this combination. However, this transaction does pressure BNP's capitalization.
