Fisheries Research Agency, Others Isolate Phage that Kills Cyanobacteria.

Tokyo, Japan, Sept 6, 2005 - (JCNN) - The Fisheries Research Agency (FRA Fra: see Angelico, Fra; Bartolommeo di Pagholo del Fattorino, Fra; Fra Filippo Lippi under Lippi. ) has identified a phage that kills cyanbacteria, in collaboration with Fukui Prefectural University The Fukui Prefectural University (福井県立大学   and SDS 1. 2. (tool) SDS - Schema Definition Set.
Biotech. The joint research group has succeeded in isolasting a phage from lake water and elucidating its properties.

The isolated phage can specifically infect and extinguish Microcystis aeruginosa, a kind of cyanobacteria cyanobacteria (sī'ənōbăktĭr`ēə, sī-ăn'ō–) or blue-green algae, photosynthetic bacteria that contain chlorophyll.  that causes water bloom, an abnormal generation of cyanobacteria.

The group expects that this discovery will lead to the development of innovative techniques to control water bloom and prevent water pollution.

In recent years, water bloom has frequently occurred in lakes worldwide. Some of cyanobacteria not only cause water pollution but tend to generate toxins and harm the lives of human beings and animals.
