As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 75,386. As of 2005, the population slightly dropped to 72,690 according to the Census Bureau. . It also rings the bell for this nervous student teacher. Over the summer, my friends and family members have asked if I was nervous about the upcoming school year, and I always responded "No." Now that it is here, however, I feel my answer has changed to "Yes." Even so, I am eagerly looking forward to the experience. The one thing that was missing was emotional preparation, such as how to deal with some measure of self-doubt. With two semesters of practicum practicum (prak´tik n See internship. under my belt and the upcoming 15 weeks of student teaching, I should be well prepared to take charge on my own. But when will it all come together? How do I blend all the hours of classroom work with all the other issues: school rules, curriculum goals, challenging students and their parents, dealing with other teachers? The 4th-graders of room 209 are ready, and as I enter the doorway I know I will become more confident each day. It is like going to school for the first time all over again. Running amok, sometimes referred to as simply amok (also spelled amuck or amuk , but I take solace in knowing that I am not alone; many of my fellow student teachers are experiencing the same feelings. We should constantly challenge ourselves to stay involved, stay organized, manage our time to the fullest extent, and, most important, learn from the collected wisdom of other teachers. Also, do not forget to learn from your students. They may end up being your best teachers! A note to returning education majors: Take advantage of every opportunity to be involved in your school of education and its activities. Practical experience, rather than just completing classroom work, is the best way to get a better hold on your profession. Associating with other members on campus and at the national meetings was a great way to increase my knowledge about the teaching profession. Take advantage of your membership and attend seminars and workshops. The investment will pay off many times over. We have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives we touch.
