First self-heating, blow molded plastic can.A blow molded PP container that self-heats food to 145 F on demand has been commercialized by OnTech LLC in San Diego. The 16-oz can is designed to contain 10 oz of coffee, tea, broth, or baby formula. It will debut in several beverage packages late this year. Sonoco Corp. in Hartsville, S.C., will manufacture and assemble components of the self-heating cans. The OnTech plastic can includes a chamber consisting of an inner cone and an outer cylinder, both extrusion blow molded in six layers using an EVOH EVOH - Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Polymer (chemical industry) barrier core and PP skins. Other components, including a pushbutton release and cap, are injection molded. Wayne Wooddell, OnTech's chief financial officer, says heating occurs when water is released and makes contact with crushed, desiccated limestone, creating an exothermic ex·o·ther·mal (-m l)adj. reaction. The contents heat to 145 F in 6 min and remain hot for about 20 min. The shelf-stable package does not require refrigeration prior to use. A version that is entirely injection molded and designed to accommodate more viscous contents like thick soups and pastas is in development. OnTech: (858) 486-1945, www.ontech.com
