First reindeer parade is a hit.

MORE than 6,000 people lined the streets to watch a reindeer parade in South Wales.

The town of Aberdare welcomed Santa on his sleigh, pulled by six reindeer, as part of Rhondda Cynon Taf's first winter parade of 2008.

During the parade, the Christmas lights were switched on and there was also a Santa's grotto, funfair rides and food stalls.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Robert Smith said: "We are delighted that our first parade in Aberdare was a great success.

"We hope everyone will join us at our forthcoming festive events."

Members of TEDS - a voluntary group that offers training and education support in substance misuse - supported the event with a bucket collection.

All the money collected on the night will go to the Mayor's chosen charities - the British Heart Foundation, TEDS and the Special Baby Care Unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

Mountain Ash is the next town centre in the Cynon Valley to host a reindeer parade on Tuesday, December 2, from 5pm until 7pm.

Also joining in the free festive fun will be Jack Frost plus the Ultimate Dance group and there will be a Santa's Grotto and funfair.
