First quarter mergers & acquisitions increase.

) reports that the number of mergers and acquisitions for 11 categories of media and information companies increased 28%, going from 109 deals in 2004 to 140 deals this year. The value of the deals increased 132%, going from $4.16 billion in 2004 to $9.67 billion this year.

 Magazine category valued at $349 million in the first quarter of 2005 compared to 11 deals valued at $676 million in the period last year. It is owned by the New York Times.  for $410 million was the foruth largest deal of the quarter while McGraw-Hill's acquisition of J.D. Powers & Associates for $350 million was the sixth largest deal of the quarter.

Whitestone Communications (New York) reported 111 deals in the first quarter this year compared to 91 deals in the 2004 period. The value of those deals fell from $4.8 billion in 2004 to $3.9 billion in the 2005 period. Whitestone president Baran Rosen said "deal makers continued to benefit from a positive economic environment that saw relatively low interest rates for debt financing Debt Financing
