First Union Bank selects Amdahl to meet increasing demand for mainframe power.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 1995--Amdahl Corp. today announces major computing capacity upgrades by First Union Corp. of Charlotte, N.C.

The bank will complete the upgrade with three 5995-10670M ten-way multiprocessors plus a 5995-5570M processor. The systems will be installed in the bank's data centers in Charlotte, N.C., and Jacksonville, Fla.

With more than 1,330 banking outlets, First Union has the third largest branch network in the United States. It is also one of the fastest growing banks with more than 50 mergers in the past 10 years, and so requires information processing that is both robust and capable of growing as fast as the bank does. The new 5995M processors meet the growth needs of First Union without requiring additional data centers.

The four high-capacity systems will allow First Union to distribute workload between the bank's data centers in North Carolina and Florida. An additional benefit will be the disaster protection offered by having two similar but geographically separate data centers.
