First U.S. census. (The August Times).

August 1, 1790--The U.S. finished its first census, or count of all its people, on this day, just over a year after George Washington was elected president. Back then, there were only 4 million citizens in 16 states. Now there are more than 281 million, which is over a quarter of a billion. How much has the population grown? The U.S. takes a census every 10 years. Until the next in 2010, visit www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html for the latest estimate.
