A writer or composer of psalms. psalmist Noun a writer of psalms Noun 1. offers this prayer: "To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul." Psalm 25 is a prayer for help. Verse 1 is a description of prayer using the metaphor of the soul. In ancient Israel, the lifting up of one's hands in an outstretched out·stretch tr.v. out·stretched, out·stretch·ing, out·stretch·es To stretch out; extend. outstretched Adjective gesture suggested placing one's life in God's grace. It was a way of saying that one's life depended entirely on God and God's blessings. Verses 4-5 suggest that the subject of prayer is learning. Prayer is not self-taught; it does not come from reason or experience or the gathering of information. Rather, prayer comes from God who teaches us (v. 4) and leads us (v. 5) in God's saving knowledge. God is trustworthy because God is full of "steadfast love and mercy" (vv. 6-7). Therefore, the psalmist can cry to God for help and forgiveness when he fails to follow God's torah. God will instruct in·struct v. in·struct·ed, in·struct·ing, in·structs v.tr. 1.
