First Patent Issued for Metrologic's HoloTrak Scanner Technology.

BLACKWOOD, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--September 30, 1999--

Metrologic Instruments Metrologic Instruments is an automated identification and data capture (AIDC) company headquartered in Blackwood, New Jersey.

Metrologic Instruments designs, manufactures and markets bar code decoding hardware, adaptive optical solutions and high-speed image processing
, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: MTLG), a leading manufacturer of laser and holographic See holographic storage.  bar code scanning products, today announced that on September 21, 1999, Metrologic's first U.S. Patent covering its HoloTrak(R) holographic bar code scanners A device specialized for reading bar codes and converting them into either the ASCII or EBCDIC digital character code. Pen scanners, also known as wand scanners, were the first type of bar code scanner developed in the 1970s.  was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office The United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO or USPTO) is an agency in the United States Department of Commerce that provides patent protection to inventors and businesses for their inventions, and trademark registration for product and intellectual property .

"The patent is the first issued of the many HoloTrak-based patent applications that have been allowed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. We expect more HoloTrak patents to issue by the end of 1999," stated Nancy Smith, Metrologic's Corporate Counsel. The title of the issued patent is "Holographic Scanning System with High-Resolution 2-D Scanning Field Steerable Within 3-D Scanning Volume."

The qualitative and quantitative extent of Metrologic's holographic technology will be represented by the number of unique U.S. patents that have been allowed and will issue pertaining per·tain

A significant component of Metrologic's holographic technology is the Holodisc, which contains up to 24 holographic elements that focus a laser beam, sweep it across the bar code, then receive the reflected light back from the bar code. As the Holodisc turns, it focuses several laser beams into multiple focal planes The plane, perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens, in which images of points in the object field of the lens are focused.  to create thousands of scan lines A horizontal line (a row) in a video frame. Camcorders sense image frames a line at a time, and display systems create images a line at a time. The scan lines are the vertical resolution of the system; for example, an NTSC TV signal uses 525 lines, 480 of which contain image data  per second, resulting in a very large, dense scan field. Replacing the multi-piece optics of traditional laser scanners, the Holodisc enables Metrologic's holographic scanners to deliver more effective, reliable scanning performance than those currently offered in the marketplace.

Metrologic President, C. Harry Knowles, concluded, "We are confident that the thorough patent coverage we are pursuing will protect the extraordinary holographic technology that Dr. LeRoy Dickson, Vice President-Optical Engineering, and his team have designed into our scanners."

Metrologic's HoloTrak bar code scanners are currently in use by customers worldwide for hands-free, walk-under, work-in-process, and high-speed conveyor Conveyor
