First Linux Based HSM Announced by UniTree Software, Inc.


SAN RAMON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1999--

UniTree Software, Inc. announces the release of its industry leading Hierarchical Storage Management See HSM.  (HSM) product on the Linux operating system.

The product will be available at the start of the 1999 Linux World Expo August 10th through the 12th in San Jose, CA. UniTree Software, Inc. becomes the first company in the industry with a commercially available HSM to announce support for the open source Linux operating system.

The UniTree Central File Manager (UCFM UCFM United Christian Faith Ministries ) product transparently moves data from disk file systems to removable media such as tape or optical for automated disk management and more cost effective storage. Files migrated to removable media appear to be on disk and are transparently staged from removable media back to the disk based file system upon users request.

Initially UCFM for Linux will ship on Redhat Software's Linux release 6.0 and will run on Intel based hardware that is supported by Redhat's release. Future releases are scheduled that will run on Sun Microsystem's (Nasdaq: SUNW SUNW Sun Microsystems, Inc (former stock symbol; now JAVA)

The UCFM (UniTree Central File Manager) product is compliant with the industry standard IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  Mass Storage Reference Model. UniTree's ability to quickly port to the Linux operating system is a testament to the openness and portability of the UniTree architecture. UCFM currently runs on Solaris from Sun Microsytems, IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment.  from SGI, HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family.
