First F-16 CCIP kits. (Digest).

In June Lockheed Martin Aeronautics began deliveries of kits for the US Air Force F-16 Common Configuration Implementation Program (CCIP), under which approximately 650 F-16C/D Block 40/50s will have upgraded cockpits and avionics.

The CCIP is firstly being implemented on F-16 Block 50/52s in phases. Current kits include a Modular Mission Computer and colour displays. The first aircraft is scheduled for completion in January 2002. From March 2002 kits will include a combined electronics interrogator/ transponder, giving the F-16 autonomous beyond visual range air-to-air capability. It will also carry an advanced flir targeting pod (to be selected) in addition to the Harm Targeting System pod, allowing F-16s to employ both Maverick and laser guided bombs against air defences. Aircraft deliveries wi11 begin in September 2002. From 2003 the Link 16 Multifunctional Information Distribution System, JHMCS (Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System) and an electronic HSI (horizontal situation indicator) will be added. US Air Force Block 40/42 F-16s will receive all phases simultaneously, starting in 2005. The CCIP will provide commonality throughout the US Air Force F-16 Block 40/50 fleet, as well as with other F-16s, including the F-16A/B MLU (Mid-Life Update), new production F-16s (from spring 2003), and late-build export F-16s. Total value to Lockheed Martin is approximately $ one billion. Some overseas operators have expressed interest in similar upgrades.
