Below, Peleliu (LHA 5) transits the channel into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on 29 August. There, the San Diego, Calif.-based Peleliu, Germantown (LSD LSD or lysergic acid diethylamide (lī'sûr`jĭk, dī'ĕth`ələmĭd, dī'ĕthəlăm`ĭd), alkaloid synthesized from lysergic acid, which is found in the fungus ergot (  42), Ogden (LPD 5), Jarrett (FFG 33) and Decatur (DDG 73) joined up with the Pearl Harbor-based Port Royal (CG 73) and Greeneville (SSN 772) to form Expeditionary Strike Group The Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG), also known as an Expeditionary Strike Force, is a military concept which was introduced in the U.S. military in the early 1990s and is based on the Naval Expeditionary Task Force. The ESG concept allows the U.S.  (ESG) 1. The ships' subsequent departure from Hawaii marked the first deployment of an ESG. The expeditionary strike group concept combines the capabilities of an amphibious ready group An Amphibious Ready Group of the United States Navy consists of a Navy element—a group of ships known as an amphibious task force (ATF)—and a landing force (LF) of United States Marines (and occasionally, United States Army troops), in total about 5,000 people.  and a Marine expeditionary unit A Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) that is constructed around an infantry battalion reinforced, a helicopter squadron reinforced, and a task-organized combat service support element. It normally fulfills Marine Corps forward sea-based deployment requirements.  with strike escort ships, providing commanders with expanded warfare capabilities both at sea and on land.
