First Charter currently operates 58 financial centers, including nine in the mountains and foothills of western North Carolina Western North Carolina (often abbreviated as WNC) is the region of North Carolina which includes the Appalachian Mountains, thus it is often known geographically as the state's Mountain Region. . Under the terms of the agreement, United Community Banks will acquire the loans and fixed assets, as well as assume the deposits of each branch. As of March 31, 2006, total loans were $9 million and deposits were $37 million. The transaction is expected to close late in the third quarter of this year, subject to regulatory approvals.
