First Book-Houston's Local Advisory Board (LAB) works to promote and facilitate the distribution of new books to children from at risk families giving them the opportunity to read and own their first new books. The only behavior measure that correlates significantly with literacy and reading scores is the number of books in the home. 61 percent of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children. With that in mind, First Book-Houston identifies community-based literacy programs reaching children living at or below the poverty level and provides them with grants for books and educational materials at no cost to the child or program recipient. First Book-Houston's Local Advisory Board is part of First Book, a national network of community volunteers.
