First Application of TransPlus Exceeds Expectations.FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1997--Chinese Petroleum Corp. (CPC (1) (Central Processing Complex) An IBM mainframe that has two or more central processors (CPs) that share memory. It is the collection of processors, memory and I/O subsystems manufactured with a single serial number, typically all contained in one cabinet. ) and Mobil Technology Company (MTC mtc - A Modula-2 to C translator. ftp://rusmv1.rus.uni-stuttgart.de/soft/Unixtools/compilerbau/mtc.tar.Z. ) announce the successful commercial debut of their jointly developed TransPlus(SM) process at CPC's Lin-Yuan plant in Taiwan. TransPlus(SM) is a low-cost, high-conversion technology for transalkylating heavy aromatics and toluene toluene (tōl`y ēn') or methylbenzene (mĕth'əlbĕn`zēn), C7H8 to produce higher-value mixed xylenes. Performance of the CPC unit, streamed in June, already exceeds expectations, with throughputs and product selectivity greater than design. TransPlus(SM) eliminates the strict feed specifications required by other transalkylation processes. It utilizes a Mobil proprietary catalyst that is specifically designed to tolerate high levels of heavy aromatics without excessive catalyst aging. With its greater feedstock flexibility, TransPlus(SM) enables refiners to produce high-value mixed xylenes while reducing the heavy aromatics content in gasoline. This can help refiners meet new, more stringent gasoline reformulation or distillation specifications. The successful Mobil/CPC partnership began in June 1995 and moved TransPlus(SM) from concept to commercialization in less than two years. The TransPlus(SM) application at Lin-Yuan is a simple retrofit, involving a catalyst switchover switch·o·ver n. A complete shift, as from one system to another. without major equipment modifications. With its higher throughput capability and lower hydrogen requirement, TransPlus(SM) has increased the CPC unit's capacity by 20 percent, boosted mixed-xylenes production by 30 percent, and reduced energy consumption. TransPlus(SM) is available to the industry for license from Mobil Technology Sales and Licensing.
