Firm looks into starting Springfield weekly.

Byline: Jack Moran The Register-Guard

SPRINGFIELD - A new Portland firm wants to fill a gap in community news coverage by opening a weekly newspaper in Springfield, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.

At this point, Beacon Communication is trying to recruit employees to work at the newspaper, and secure a site. The company's general manager, WillowSong Hall, said initial staff may include former employees of The Springfield News who have contacted the company and said they are interested in remaining in the newspaper business.

"There's a void in Springfield," Hall said. "We feel that communities have a right to have a voice, and that's why we decided to start a newspaper from scratch."

Hall said she hopes the paper - tentatively called the Springfield Tribune - will have its first issue on newsstands before Christmas.

"We're going to move as fast as we can to get people in place and get subscribers."
