Firewall Piggybacked into Router Eliminates Need for Separate One and Protects Smaller Sites.

ANN ARBOR Ann Arbor, city (1990 pop. 109,592), seat of Washtenaw co., S Mich., on the Huron River; inc. 1851. It is a research and educational center, with a large number of government and industrial research and development firms, many in high-technology fields such as , Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 1996--Symplex Communications, a worldwide provider of LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  to WAN connectivity, has added a Dynamic Firewall function and a Dynamic Internet Protocol See Internet and TCP/IP.

The firewall feature provides a cost-effective solution that simplifies and strengthens protection against network interlopers INTERLOPERS. Users can choose between Dynamic IP Assignment for single-user Internet access See how to access the Internet.  and routing/bridging for multi-user LAN-to-LAN communications for each destination, making DirectRoute the first product line to offer both options in the same router.

Dynamic IP Firewall

The new Symplex Dynamic IP Firewall provides low-cost protection from unauthorized access from both the Internet and intranet of intercompany communications by incorporating the firewall function at the hacker or saboteur's point of entry. This eliminates the expense of having a dedicated server running firewall software connected to the network, and it also makes it possible to protect smaller sites that previously remained vulnerable for budgetary reasons.

Security is configurable by remote profile, allowing firewalling abilities to be changed to provide the right balance of security for each site with which the router is communicating. An auditing function alerts the network manager to attempted security breaches.

In addition, to strengthen security, dynamic filtering capabilities have been added to the standard static filter method of firewalling. Dynamic filters adapt static rules to ensure that only properly addressed data can enter or exit the LAN. This eliminates potential unauthorized entry since only the negotiated sockets are open. In contrast, static filters maintain a series of open sockets, creating holes in the firewall.

"Traditional firewalls that function at the network level act like traffic cops Traffic Cops is a documentary series on BBC One which follows traffic officers from various police forces including Hampshire, Cheshire and South Yorkshire. It shows what is involved in the day-to-day role of a traffic officer and the incidents they come across.  who may let speeders past a barricade," said George Brostoff, chief executive officer of Symplex. "Putting firewall technology on routers is a more logical, simpler and more affordable way of protecting communications. It stops entry at your front door before anyone ever gets inside."
