Firefighters rescue cat inside a wall

A cat stuck inside a wall was rescued by firefighters, who used a thermal-imaging camera to pinpoint the animal's location. Lois Kessler said her cat, named Kitty, fled Sunday when her grandson tried to pet her. She hid in a closet and fell through a hole in the floor, then got lost in the space between the floorboards and the ceiling of the story below.

"I tried to coax her out," Kessler said. "I called, but she wouldn't come. I got frantic. I could hear her crying, `Meow, meow!'"

Assistant Fire Chief Don Long said he could not do anything at first because Kitty was still wandering around. But once she started meowing from one place inside a wall, firefighter used the camera to find her exact location, then cut through the drywall to free the cat. She then fled and hid under a couch.

"We're always rescuing cats from somewhere," Long said. "But this is the first time we've had to get one out of a wall."
