Firefighters plan to ignite house near I-5 for training purposes.

Byline: The Register-Guard

GOSHEN - Area firefighters want the public to know they will be training by setting a house on fire near Interstate 5 and Highway 58 that is likely to catch folks' attention, but they don't need to call 911 about it.

The first training will be today between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. In that session, smoke machines will be used to simulate fire conditions.

The second training, scheduled for Saturday, will run from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A series of rooms will be set on fire, and crews will be sent in to extinguish the flames.

When the building is no longer safe for firefighters to enter, it will be allowed to burn to the ground.

The structure is at 34220 Matthews Road, which is just east of I-5 and south of Highway 58.

The Goshen Rural Fire Protection District received the structure as a donation for the purpose of training.

Other fire districts taking part include South Lane, Pleasant Hill, Dexter, Lowell, Oakridge, Mohawk and Eugene.

The Goshen fire district is working to have reader boards placed on I-5 notifying motorists of the training exercise. Fire officials said the fire may cause minor traffic delays in the area.
