Fire hits firehouse; ice causes injuries

A blaze broke out in a fire station as firefighters slept, gutting the maintenance area.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries after slipping on ice that formed on the bitterly cold night as water was pumped onto the fire. The temperature was 2 degrees.

Firefighters woke up early Sunday after a police officer noticed smoke spilling from the building. The garage, where the fire occurred, didn't have smoke detectors because the vehicle exhaust would set them off, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday.

The rest of the firehouse can still be used, officials said.

A fire engine, an ambulance and a special-operations vehicle were saved. A bomb-squad vehicle was destroyed. The fire's cause was under investigation.
