Fire causes damage to old Pearl Brewery.AP--Fire fighters are investigating the cause of an overnight blaze at the gold-domed Pearl Brewery, a landmark along the San Antonio River. The fire erupted Monday night and caused minimal damage to the vacant building on the northern edge of downtown, San Antonio Fire Department Lt. T.J. Tymrak said. No injuries were reported. It took 80 firefighters to help search the large structure for the source of the fire. The fire eventually was traced to old cork insulation in a fourth-floor refrigeration room, Tymrak said. It was extinguished about 2:30 a.m., about six hours after firefighters were called to the scene. The brewery made Pearl and Lone Star beer until it closed in 2001 after 116 years of operation. The Pearl Brewery opened in 1886 as the San Antonio Brewing Association. By 1916 the brewery was one of the largest in Texas. A San Antonio investment group purchased the brewery from Pabst in August 2002 and is redeveloping the complex. |
