Finke, Beth. Long Time, No See.FINKE, Beth. Long time, no see. Univ. of Illinois Press. 204p. illus. c2003. 0-252-07219-7 $14.95. SA An astonishingly candid review of the author's life and how it has been affected by disability resulting from Type I diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes. Diagnosed at the age of seven, losing her vision shortly after her marriage when she was 25, Finke was 43 at the time of publication. She takes the reader through the tearful experiences of eye surgeries, the realization that she will never see again, facing an employer who has no confidence in her future ability to work, trying to learn Braille, Seeing Eye School, and the birth of her son who has a severely disabling genetic defect (resulting from her genes). She reveals weaknesses in her own character that she had to overcome as she battled her personal guilt in these events. She recognizes the strengths of her character that helped her through the difficulties. She insists on maintaining her sense of humor and her drive to create a fulfilling life. This is a story of a strong woman who refuses to accept defeat, and the roles of her loved ones as she battles the effects of her disease. Finke currently works as a freelance writer and a nude model for artists. Highly recommended. Ann Hart, Trustee, Juniata County Lib., Mifflintown, PA S--Recommended for senior high school students.
