Financial help for heating bills now available.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Money is available through the Lane County Human Services Commission to help low-income senior or disabled residents with their winter heating bills.

The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP LIEAP Low Income Energy Assistance Program ) is a congressionally funded program aimed at households whose total gross income is at or below 60 percent of Oregon's median income level. For a one-person household, gross monthly income must be $1,402 or less, and for a household of four people, gross monthly income must be $2,695 or less.

The amount of assistance a household receives depends on several factors. The program pays assistance directly into a household's utility account as a one-time payment that can range from $125 to $320.

Appointments to apply for assistance began last week for people age 60 and older, and for households that include disabled members. Appointments for all other households must wait for additional funding from Congress.

Seniors should contact one of the following senior centers for an appointment.
