 reported on September 30, 2004, that several German dioceses are facing a financial crisis of unprecedented proportions. The archdiocese of Berlin, as well as dioceses in Hamburg and Trier Trier (trēr), Latin Augusta Treverorum, city (1994 pop. 99,183), Rhineland-Palatinate, SW Germany, a port on the Moselle (Ger. Mosel) River, near the Luxembourg border. , have announced drastic cuts.

Aachen, one of Germany's biggest dioceses, is now on the list of those struggling to make ends meet. Economic changes for Catholics there are coming faster and more thoroughly than ever before. Bishop Heinrich Mussinghoff Dr. Heinrich Mussinghoff (born October 29 1940) is the Roman Catholic Bishop of Aachen, Germany.

Born in Osterwick (now Rosendahl) in northwestern Westphalia, he studied philosophy and theology in Münster and Freiburg.
