Film graduate gets camera rolling.

It may not be Hollywood, but Confederation College Confederation College is a provincially funded community college located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1967, and has area campuses in Dryden, ON, Fort Frances, ON, Geraldton, ON, Kenora, ON, Marathon, ON and Sioux Lookout, ON.  film production program graduate Jay Cano, 24, sees his hometown of Thunder Bay Thunder Bay, city (1991 pop. 113,946), SW Ont., Canada, on Thunder Bay inlet of Lake Superior. The city was created in 1970 by the amalgamation of the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur and two adjoining townships.  as a good place to get his start in the film and video production business.

"I'm not just looking at Thunder Bay, but all of northwestern Ontario Northwestern Ontario is the region within the Canadian province of Ontario which lies north and west of Lake Superior, and west of Hudson Bay and James Bay. It includes most of subarctic Ontario. ," says soft-spoken Cano, who is starting up a company called Kablaam Productions. "There are a lot of small towns that do not have any film and video production available."

Cano says his interest in film production was sparked when he was about 11 years old and was asked to act in another film student's production. It gave him a chance to see video and film production up close and it immediately piqued his interest.

Cano studied a year of television production before getting into Confederation College's highly competitive film production program.

He has had some experience already. One of his more recent efforts included assisting the Ontario Early Years in Thunder Bay in filming a training video for centre staff.

Of course, there is one hurdle he has to cross, and it is a big one.

"Right now, I'm just waiting on funding from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF CYBF Canadian Youth Business Foundation )," says Cano, who has applied for $15,000 in funding to purchase a computer for film editing, professional lighting and a couple of cameras.

"Equipment is going to take up a good portion of the money," he says.

The Canadian Youth Business Foundation is an organization founded by the Royal Bank of Canada Bank of Canada

Canada's central bank, established under the Bank of Canada Act (1934). It was founded during the Great Depression to regulate credit and currency. The Bank acts as the Canadian government's fiscal agent and has the sole right to issue paper money.
and the Canadian Youth Foundation to encourage entrepreneur-ship for young people. Some of the tougher requirements for Cano included the development of a business plan and convincing a board of the viability of his plan.

With the aid of a business consultant and a mentor who served as an advocate for him, he was able to complete the business plan and obtain the funding.

Also on his agenda was pounding the pavement of Thunder Bay and surrounding towns, offering business his production skills for commercials and other applications. Cano says he is looking at mostly commercials, but he is also prepared to do music and documentary productions, corporate promotional and educational videos and whatever other else he can do on the production side.

"Hopefully, if I can get enough business, I eventually want to be able to open my own store front," he says. "I'll also be doing some of my own filming. I've got a few projects I would like to do, one of which I'm still in a research mode for. It is a documentary on prisoners of war prisoners of war, in international law, persons captured by a belligerent while fighting in the military. International law includes rules on the treatment of prisoners of war but extends protection only to combatants.  in the Northern Ontario Northern Ontario is the part of the province of Ontario which lies north of Lake Huron (including Georgian Bay), the French River and Lake Nipissing.

Northern Ontario has a land area of 802,000 km² (310,000 mi²) and constitutes 87% of the land area of Ontario, although it
lumber camps. I've got a lot of other projects in mind, but they're on hold for now."
