Figgie International appoints Robert D. Vilsack general counsel; Luther A. Harthun named senior vice president-legal, plans July retirement.


WILLOUGHBY, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 1996--Figgie International Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS: FIGIA and FIGI FIGI Fortress International Group Inc. (Columbia, MD) ) today appointed Robert D. Vilsack to the position of general counsel. The company's long-time general counsel, Luther A. Harthun, will remain with Figgie as senior vice president-legal until his planned retirement on July 3, 1996.

You don't easily replace a senior manager with his knowledge, experience, and intellect, but we are fortunate that Lou and Bob will work together over the next several months to ensure an orderly transition."

Vilsack, 34, joined Figgie International in 1990 as corporate counsel and assistant secretary and was named senior corporate counsel in 1995. Vilsack has a broad corporate legal background with significant experience in mergers and acquisitions, litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right. The library has extensive collections in literature and American history, including the William Holmes McGuffey Library and Museum and the Edgar W. , Oxford, OH, with a bachelor's degree in political science. He received his Juris Doctor The degree awarded to an individual upon the successful completion of law school.

Vilsack and his wife, Holly, and their two children, Kevin and Allison, reside in Concord Township. He is a lifelong resident of the Mentor area and is a 1979 graduate of Mentor High School Mentor High School is a public high school located in Mentor, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Mentor Exempted Village School District (informally, "Mentor Schools"). .

Harthun, 60, who joined Figgie International (then "Automatic" Sprinkler Corporation of America) as general counsel and corporate secretary in 1966, helped orchestrate the company's many acquisitions during its rapid growth years in the late 1960s. He was named vice president of Figgie International in 1970 and assumed responsibilities for the company's international operations in 1979, when he was named vice president-international. He became a senior vice president in 1981.

Harthun received his bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University in 1957, his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School The University of Chicago Law School, having recently celebrated its centennial in the 2002-2003 school year, has established itself as a high profile part of the University of Chicago.  in 1960 and a master's of law degree from the University of California at Berkeley (body, education) University of California at Berkeley - (UCB)
