FIFTY YEARS OF CARBONLESS PAPER. Appleton Appleton, city (1990 pop. 65,695), seat of Outagamie co., E Wis., on the Fox River near its exit from the northern end of Lake Winnebago, in a dairying and stockraising region; inc. 1857.  of Appleton, Wisconsin Appleton is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the Fox River, 100 miles (161 km) north of Milwaukee. As of the 2005 census estimate, the city had a total population of 70,217. , USA, has marked 50 years of manufacturing carbonless paper. What the company says began as a search for a better receipt paper resulted in the invention of an office productivity phenomenon that continues as an indispensable part of the business world. Fifty years ago the Appleton Coated Paper Coated paper is paper which has been coated by an inorganic compound to impart certain qualities to the paper, including weight and surface gloss, smoothness or ink absorbency. Kaolinite is the compound most often used for coating papers used in commercial printing.  Co., now known as Appleton, helped to introduce the first carbonless paper. Then as today it was the "NCR Paper A multiple-part paper form that does not use carbon paper. The ink is adhered to the reverse side of the previous sheet. Originally developed by NCR Corporation and known as "NCR brand, carbonless paper," it has also been called "no carbon required" paper. " brand of carbonless paper. Promotion of the product said it was a new paper product that "eliminates carbon paper." The first commercial sale occurred on March 26, 1954. Since then, more than 12 million tons of NCR Paper carbonless paper have been sold.
