Fibrous dysplasia of the temporal bone.
The otoscopic view is that of a left ear canal ear canal n. The narrow, tubelike passage through which sound enters the ear. Also called external auditory canal. in a 24-year-old man. A hard, slow-growing, bone-like mass is seen extending from the superior external auditory canal external auditory canal n. See ear canal. wall. Only a small slit of the external canal opening remains at the inferior edge of the canal. Treatment involves the repeated conservative surgical excision of the obstructing fibrous dysplasia fibrous dysplasia, n.pl See dysplasia, fibrous. and of abnormal bone within the external auditory canal and, in some cases, also in the middle ear. Repeated surgery is required as needed as needed prn. See prn order. every few months or years, depending on the rate of growth.
