Festivities to Mark the 100th Anniversary of the First Scientific Climbing of Uganda's ''Mountains of the Moon''.MIAMI Miami, cities, United States Miami (mīăm`ē, –ə). 1 City (1990 pop. 358,548), seat of Dade co., SE Fla., on Biscayne Bay at the mouth of the Miami River; inc. 1896. -- A joint expedition of Ugandan and Italian mountaineers will climb the Rwenzori Mountains, the fabled Mountains of the Moon Mountains of the Moon, Africa: see Ruwenzori. , this month, replicating the first scientific exploration of the Mountains in 1906. The Centenary Celebrations are intended to note the historical cooperation between the countries and encourage visitors to explore these beautiful mountains which form the third highest range in Africa. Several official activities are planned from the 10th through the 25th of June to mark the significant achievements which have benefited scientists and mountaineers for the past 100 years. Events will be held as well in Italy and Uganda highlighting the ascent of the "Duke of Abruzzi," featuring photographs, films and sporting events including marathons, tennis tournaments and bicycle races. The Rwenzori Mountains, which cover an area of 75 miles long and 40 miles wide, figured prominently in the writings of Ptolemy in 150 A.D. who identified the "Mountains of the Moon" as the source of the Nile

The Rwenzoris provide a variety of excursion opportunities for travelers interested in experiencing the many different eco-systems of Uganda. There are also several tour operators who specialize in independent tours to the region where more rigorous hiking and climbing expeditions can be set up.
