Festival focuses on Estonian composer.

Two guest artists from Estonia are at the heart of the Music Today Festival that begins Friday and runs for five days at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  School of Music and Dance.

The biennial festival celebrates 20th and 21st century music and will be held in two sections, the first this week and the second in January.

The centerpiece this week is a tribute to the life and work of choral composer Veljo Tormis Veljo Tormis (b. August 7, 1930) is an Estonian composer, regarded to be one of the greatest living choral composers[1] [2] and one of the most important composers of the 20th century in Estonia[3]. , who will be a composer-in-residence at the UO.

On Saturday, Tormis will deliver a lecture-demonstration with musical examples sung by five choruses that also are performing in an evening concert.

The evening concert, `Bridge of Song: The Music of Veljo Tormis,' will feature performances of some of Tormis' major works sung by various combinations of nearly 300 singers from Oregon Repertory Singers, Pacific Youth Choir, Unistus Chamber Choir A chamber choir is the choral equivalent of a chamber ensemble, using voices instead of instruments. The choir will usually consist of 5-15 elite singers, often associated with a larger choral group. , the University Singers and UO Chamber Choir.

Estonian conductor Hirvo Surva will lead the concert. The program includes: ``Bridge of Song (Laulusild),'' ``Vision of Estonia (Nagemus Eestist)'' and ``Autumn Landscapes (Sigus Maastikud).''

Both Tormis and Surva are Trotter Visiting Professors at the UO School of Music and Dance.

The lecture will be at 3 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $3 at the door. The concert is at 8 p.m. Admission $10 ($6 students and seniors) at the door.

Both events are in Beall Concert Hall at the music school, 961 E. 18th Ave.

The theme of the festival this year is ``Contemporary Crossroads,'' a celebration of musical diversity. The festival features three other concerts:

University Symphony will play Stravinsky's ``Firebird'' Suite as well as Suite in F by Sir Hubert Parry and the Horn Concerto No. 3 by W.A. Mozart with Lydia Van Dreel as soloist. The concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday in Beall Hall. Tickets are $7 ($5 students and seniors) at the door.

A program of new music by local composers will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Beall Hall. It will include works by Aaron Rosenberg, Luke Carlson, Jesse Jones, David Roberts, Justin Morrell, Jason Gerraughty, Jerry Hui, Aaron Manela and Scott Ordway. Admission is free.
