Festival evolves into theatre.A PLAY will celebrate the achievements of Charles Charles, archduke of Austria Charles, 1771–1847, archduke of Austria; brother of Holy Roman Emperor Francis II. Despite his epilepsy, he was the ablest Austrian commander in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars; however, he was handicapped by Darwin Darwin, city (1991 pop. 67,946), capital of the Northern Territory, N Australia, on Port Darwin, an inlet of the Timor Sea. Remotely situated on the sparsely settled north coast, Darwin had no rail connection with any of the major Australian cities until 2003, when 150 years ago. The legendary scientist, who came up with the theory of evolution, would have been 200 years old this year. His famous book On the Origin of Species first appeared in November 1859. The play After Darwin, by Timberlake Wertenbaker Timberlake Wertenbaker (born 1944) is a British playwright and translator who was born in New York City and was raised in France. Her father, Charles Wertenbaker, was a foreign correspondent for Time magazine in London. , looks at the after-effects of Darwin's discovery and how it divided him from the Church. It is being co-presented by the Centre for Behaviour and Evolution at Newcastle University, and Vivid Theatre Company, with a free after-show discussion on Darwin's ideas and legacy. The play will be performed tomorrow and Thursday at 7.30pm at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle and also at the Great North Museum: Hancock, on November 19. The play is being performed as part of the Darwin Festival, celebrating the life and work of Charles Darwin. Activities for schools and families are taking place at the Great North Museum: Hancock.
