Festival celebrates Britten works.A major festival in November will honour the work of British composer Benjamin Britten Noun 1. Benjamin Britten - major English composer of the 20th century; noted for his operas (1913-1976) Britten, Edward Benjamin Britten, Lord Britten of Aldeburgh (1913-1976), featuring performances in several Ontario cities of work with religious themes. Benjamin Britten: A Celebration marks what would have been the composer's 90th birthday and several other anniversaries--the University of Western Ontario's 125th and the 95th birthday of the festival's distinguished Canadian impresario, Nicholas Goldschmidt Nicholas Goldschmidt CC (December 6, 1908 - February 8, 2004) was a Canadian conductor, administrator, teacher, performer, music festival entrepreneur and artistic director. . "The range of his work is extraordinary: its strong link to literature; its sturdy moral base; its musical richness; and its imaginative theatrical qualities recommend it for celebration. His themes, highlighted in this festival, include peace, forgiveness, and rebirth, poignant in these times," writes Mr. Goldschmidt. From Nov. 9-30, there will be 17 performances of opera, oratorio oratorio (ôrətôr`ēō), musical composition employing chorus, orchestra, and soloists and usually, but not necessarily, a setting of a sacred libretto without stage action or scenery. and chamber music, eight lectures and numerous films with music by Britten. Works include the War Requiem The War Requiem, Op. 66 is a large-scale, non-liturgical setting of the Requiem Mass composed by Benjamin Britten in 1962. Interspersed with the traditional Latin texts are pasted, collage-like, settings of Wilfred Owen poems. in KitchenerWaterloo, Toronto and London and the opera Noye's Fludde Noye's Fludde (Noah's Flood) is a late 16th century mystery play from the Chester Mystery Cycle. It was set to music by Benjamin Britten in 1957 based on an edition by Alfred W. Pollard. (Noah's Flood) at St. Anne's Anglican church in Toronto.
