A MECHANICAL problem on the Shields ferry The Shields Ferry operates across the River Tyne between North Shields and South Shields. The service is operated by Nexus (The Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive) and is part of the Tyne and Wear Metro System.  caused the service to be suspended today.

Early-morning Tyne crossings between North Shields Coordinates:

North Shields (or locally just Shields) is a town on the north bank of the River Tyne, in the metropolitan borough of North Tyneside, in North East England. It is located eight miles (13 km) east of Newcastle upon Tyne.
and South Shields South Shields, city (1991 pop. 86,488), South Tyneside, NE England, at the mouth of the Tyne River. It is a significant port. Shipbuilding and marine engineering are the main industries; chemicals and paints are manufactured.  were cancelled after the fault was discovered this morning.

In total the ferry missed three crossings between the two towns.

But ferry operator Nexus provided a replacement bus service, and the ferry was fixed and back in action in time for the 8.15am crossing from South Shields to North Shields.

A spokesman for Nexus said: "The ferry was off first thing this morning due to a mechanical problem, which meant it had to be replaced with a bus service for the early part of this morning.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused for passengers whose journey took longer on the bus."
