FENNER, Pamela J., GREER, Anne J., WULSIN, John H., Jr., eds. Books for the journey; a guide to the world of reading. Michaelmas Press (Amesbury, MA). 343p. bibliog. index, c2003. 0-9647832-4-X. $19.95. SA

The title reflects the view of the editors that "each book is a trustworthy guide helping us read into life," and it has been compiled with the needs of a high school student in mind. The editors began by soliciting teachers and former students for suggestions for titles to include. The suggestions continue to come in and the editors promise future editions with more titles. For this volume, the 1500 books are divided into five sections: Drama, Mythology mythology [Greek,=the telling of stories], the entire body of myths in a given tradition, and the study of myths. Students of anthropology, folklore, and religion study myths in different ways, distinguishing them from various other forms of popular, often orally , Poetry, and Sacred Writing; Fiction; Biography and History; Nonfiction non·fic·tion

A legend is used to indicate which of the titles are part of the curriculum of one of the responding schools and which of the titles are "easier-to-read." An index of titles and authors is also included. The last section, Seniors Look Back, is unique in that all the suggestions have been made by senior students. The editors feel that since these books were important in the lives of these students, current students might look here first for inspiration. The items in this section might also be round in one of the other sections of the book. The categories here are mixed (fiction and history, for example), and no grade levels are included. The layout makes browsing See browse.  through the sections easy. This is more than a list of lists: the selections are thoughtful and the annotations concise.
