Feedback.Travel Industry Wants Handout I found Marilyn Carlson Nelson's article, "A Little Hospitality, Please," (CE: January 2002) discouraging. It's not exactly true that September 11 played the key role in the decline of tourism. Airlines, hotels and other travel-based industries were feeling the crunch as early as last summer. Nelson's advice to "go as a leader" apparently means to go to Washington with hat in hand. It's nice to know that Nelson has joined the ranks of so many business "leaders" this winter in begging the government for a bailout. From this traveller's perspective, there are too many travel agents, most of whom offer no real service or value and serve as middlemen. A paring of this bloated "business" is in order. There are also far too many hotels... The automotive industry The automotive industry is the industry involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of motor vehicles. Those CEOs didn't go to the government for relief. In fact, the government came to them and asked what they were going to do to keep sales going. The hospitality and travel industry is overdue for a shakeout. Most successful manufacturers have long understood that you don't build a lot of excess product and then try to create demand. You succeed by serving your customers properly. Mike Gardner TPM (1) See TP monitor. (2) (Transactions Per Minute) The number of transactions processed within one minute. See TPS. Verizon Board Recognized We were delighted with Chief Executive's designation of our board as among America's five best ("America's Best and Worst Boards," CE: October 2001). Verizon feels very fortunate to have board members who bring to the company the highest level of advice and counsel through a broad spectrum of capabilities and experience. As we work nonstop to restore telecommunication services in Manhattan in the wake of September 11, we're discovering more than ever the critical importance of our intellectual assets. Of course, it's easy to call Sunday's game the following Monday morning. Interestingly, Lear's introduction says, "Why are some boards asleep at the switch? Why do they fail to notice red flags? To take action when the handwriting looms large on the wall, readily readable to shareholders, analysts and the media?" In the case of Enron, a Monday morning introduction might have said: Blessed are they who look beyond what is reported according to according to prep. 1. I'm not laughing at, but really with, Lear and Yavitz, whose subtle message probably is: Believe no more than 10 percent of what you read and then discount by 99 percent that which you are inclined to believe.
