General Comments

There may be valid reasons for choosing a non-saint. Culture is very important. Asians have a strong attachment to ancestors, so why shouldn't they be able to name a child after a non-Christian grandparent who does not have a saint's name?

Fred Nichols

Sacramento, Calif.

Here in Atlanta, it is common for a parent to pick a name because they like the way a string of consonants and vowels sound together. Subsequently, the names are empty, impossible to pronounce, and worse, stigmatizing the child. What most folks don't realize is that names are class markers, and meaningless, "unique," absurd names signify a continuation of the cycle of poverty and ignorance.

Jill Knous

Atlanta, Ga.

Children are allowed to choose their own saint or patron during Confirmation. This allows them to choose someone they will identify with strongly.

Laura (Jean) Krall Hollenbaugh

Arvada, Colo.

I've heard of priests in the past refusing to baptize someone until the parents chose a saint's name. If we return to that, how will there be new saints' names?

Heidi Baschnagel

Clarion, Pa.

There are many more important things in child-rearing than choosing a name. But maybe that choice is indicative of the amount of thought that we'll put into other aspects of child-rearing.

Shelley Douglass

Birmingham, Ala.

We have become so secularized today that we have lost almost all of our Christian identity. This maybe an area where we can reclaim our religious heritage.

Daniel Huber

Ignacio, Colo.

Some saints' names may be out of the question. I was born on the feast of St. Polycarp, and I thank my parents for not naming me after him!

Manuel J. Marrufo

El Paso, Texas

What counts is who we really are, how we live. We cannot view the return to traditional names as the solution to what ails the church, anymore than we can resurrect the Tridentine Mass, expecting that it will recreate what we remember to be the glory days of faith.

Mary Therese Leman&

Allen Park, Mich.

As I look at many of my friends who have left the church, it seems to matter less what they are named than what kind of example and instruction

they were given by their parents.

L.M. Willey
