There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  therapy today is like trying to monitor thousands of patients with high blood pressure - but with no equipment."

Dr. Bangsberg went on to say, "Historically, the electronic medication monitor has not penetrated the routine clinical practice setting because it only monitors one medication at a time and precludes the use of pill box organizers that may improve adherence. However, by incorporating electronic monitoring within a pill box design a system can monitor individuals' medication adherence in real time, and can calculate the risk of virologic failure virologic failure Antiretroviral therapy failure, see there , which is communicated via an Internet connection to a clinical care team that is capable of intervening on adherence before the development of resistance. InforMedix has combined a good product with a good team."

The device prompts users when to take medication by sounding a chime chime, in music: see bell. . A compartment is opened to take the pill, with information displayed on an LCD screen that describes the pill and informs the patient about dosage, and includes special instructions such as "take with food." Between 1.03 and 1.185 million people in the US are living with HIV, with an additional 40,000 becoming infected each year, at a cost to the US health care system of approximately $50,000-$75,000 per year per patient, which results in total costs of $50 billion to $75 billion in total annual costs. Average adherence to HIV antiretroviral therapy is under 70%, and 20-33% of HIV-positive patients will miss at least one of their doses over any given 3-day period. And yet, just a 10% difference in adherence between individuals is associated with a doubling of viral load viral load

According to Dr. Bruce A. Kehr, M.D, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of InforMedix, "We believe the Med-eMonitor can make an enormous difference in improving the quality of life for HIV-positive patients, and dramatically lower the cost of caring for these patients borne by every major health care payor in the United States and around the world. We are very excited to have the support of Federal funding, the San Francisco General Hospital and the most distinguished and committed leadership of Dr. Bangsberg in supporting the treatment of HIV patient medication adherence, and providing independent quantitative data to validate widespread adoption of the device."

The Med-eMonitor System leverages InforMedix' strong intellectual property consisting of 15 issued patents and 12 patents pending. Previous studies have validated its use in dramatically improving medication and care plan adherence, which results in lowering the cost of care for patients with Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure congestive heart failure, inability of the heart to expel sufficient blood to keep pace with the metabolic demands of the body. In the healthy individual the heart can tolerate large increases of workload for a considerable length of time. , and Schizophrenia.
