Australian Samantha Stosur, the No.15 seed, survived a tough three-setter with Japan's Ali Sugiyama to advance.

The first seed to fall came in the men's singles where Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, ranked 26th, went down in four sets to Russian Mikhail Youzhny.
