Federated announces first steps in implementing Broadway store integration strategy; 40 stores to be converted to Macy's; nine stores sold to Sears.

Today's announcements reflect the first steps in a strategy that ultimately will bring Bloomingdale's to California and expand the Macy's nameplate in major markets throughout the West. Federated said it plans to spend approximately $525 million on store conversions and major remodels in the converted Broadway stores over the next three years.

A list of the 40 stores that will be retained and operated as Macy's is attached as an addendum addendum n. an addition to a completed written document. Federated said it plans to convert 40 retained Broadway, Emporium and Weinstock's stores to the Macy's nameplate by the middle of next year. In addition, Federated confirmed plans to convert its Bullock's stores in southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  to the Macy's nameplate in 1996, beginning in April.

The nine properties that Federated is selling to Sears -- for a purchase price and under terms that are undisclosed -- are: -0-

o Broadway in Stonewood Shopping Center, Downey, CA (134);
o Broadway at Los Altos Center, Long Beach, CA (122);
o Broadway at Whittwood Mall, Whittier, CA (128);
o Broadway at West Covina Fashion Plaza, West Covina, CA (149);
o Pasadena Plaza Broadway, Pasadena, CA (138);
o Emporium in downtown Oakland, CA (215);
o Emporium in Hillsdale, San Mateo, CA (176); and
o Broadway in Westminster, CO (135).




These properties are scheduled to be transferred to Sears by March 4, 1996 and to be operated as Broadway or Emporium stores through February. Federated said that store employees in these locations, who were notified of the impending im·pend

In the case of the stores slated to be sold, the company said it plans to close these stores sometime after the first of the year and to continue seeking buyers for the properties. The company said that eligible employees in the affected stores will be offered severance The act of dividing, or the state of being divided.

Two additional Emporium stores are scheduled to be closed during 1996 under terms of lease termination agreements previously negotiated by Broadway Stores, Inc. These are the Eastridge and Almaden Emporium stores in San Jose San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, which are expected to close in March and September, respectively.

Federated said it has yet to make a determination on the future of 21 other former Broadway stores, but expects to do so before the end of the year. In addition to the dispositions of the Broadway stores announced today, Federated said it plans to close three current Macy's/Bullock's stores that are in close proximity to retained Broadway stores. These locations include: -0-

o Macy's Coddingtown store -- store will close sometime
  after the first of the year; Macy's Coddingtown employees
  will be moved to the retained Emporium Coddingtown store;
o Macy's Birdcage store, Sacramento -- timing of closure
  is uncertain at this point; store may continue to operate
  until nearby Weinstock's store in Sunrise Mall is renovated
  and converted to Macy's, at which point Macy's Birdcage
  store would be closed and its employees transferred to the
  new Macy's store.
o Macy's San Rafael store -- store will close in January.
