Barry Winchell Barry Winchell (31 August 1977—6 July 1999) was an infantry soldier in the United States Army, whose murder by a fellow soldier, Calvin Glover, became a point of reference in the ongoing debate about the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy enforced by the military regarding , in July 1999. In an interview with The Advocate seven months after the tragedy, Addams discussed how the media added insult to injury.

"I knew immediately that my being a transgendered person would add a Jerry Springer-like angle to this story," she said. "I didn't want to see the headline 'Drag Queen Lover Tells All.'"
