Purpose and Objectives

Sports medicine is multisystem medical care delivered to athletes of any age and with varying sports and recreational commitment and ability. The goals are to prevent and treat musculo-skeletal and other system injuries, thus enabling the patient to maximize their ability to stay recreationally or competitively active. Sports medicine affects all primary providers, as they are often the first point of contact for sports-related injuries. Failure to spot an injury in its early stages can lead to more serious problems. This is the second in a two-part series in the Southern Medical Journal highlighting the field of sports medicine. The featured CME articles in this issue will focus on sports-related concussion, head and cervical spine injuries, low back pain, asthma, sudden cardiac death Sudden Cardiac Death Definition
