of a bird. Art concepts include learning how to grid a drawing and develop more advanced painting techniques. Requirements include painting a realistic bird against a simple background showing value transition. This project could integrate with science and the study of birds. Arrangements could be made with a pet store or local nature conservancy to bring a bird to class for a presentation and a live drawing session.

Materials

Student grade acrylic paint, 11" x 14" (28 x 35.5 cm) canvas board, assorted brushes, books, calendars and other photo references on birds, paper, pencil, ruler

Directions

Students are shown a video and slide presentation on the life and work of John James Audubon. After looking at various pictorial references of birds, students choose a photo and learn how to do a grid drawing of their image on a canvas board.

Prior to painting, students review color mixing and tints and shades

* Does the painting demonstrate a variety of visual textures and details indicating the student observed the photo carefully?

* Does the painting demonstrate good artistry and technique?
