Yes, John Paul II John Paul II, 1920–2005, pope (1978–2005), a Pole (b. Wadowice) named Karol Józef Wojtyła; successor of John Paul I. He was the first non-Italian pope elected since the Dutch Adrian VI (1522–23) and the first Polish and Slavic pope.  was "a force of nature, a man of iron will and passionate spirituality" ("Peter's Successor," April 22). He was also a man of volatile impatience. Seeing him admonish Fr. Ernesto Cardinal during his trip to Nicaragua conjured images of a parent who wins affection outside the family but treats his children poorly. So much for the father's benevolent kiss bestowed on his prodigal son prodigal son, in the New Testament, parable of Jesus about heaven and the sinner who repents. A young man leaves home and becomes a wastrel; repentant, he returns to be received with joyful welcome. .
