In a tribute to the priests, pioneering and otherwise, Father Peter Murphy gives us a fine pen-picture of twenty-five deceased priests of Toowoomba, a diocese established in 1929. There is also a touching dedication to three priests who died very young, long before they could be effective in apostolic work. A map of the diocese gives us some idea of the immensity im·men·si·ty

of the field of mission of the sterling priests who were charged with the care of souls in this vast region.

The development of the diocese and its parishes, the building of its churches, schools and other parish amenities are set in the times through which these priests passed--the economic depression of the 'thirties, the restrictions of World War II and the post-war recovery years. What comes through strongly in the book is the variety of characters who made up the clergy of Toowoomba in those times. They were men of God, conscious of the gift of their priesthood. They were also lively human beings; not mould-cast, but vibrant with individuality. Thus we come across Fatherr Leo Leo, in astronomy

Hayes, with his grand collection of books, Father Tom McCormack, with his famous sheep dogs, and Father John Michael, with a football club, of which he was the 'founding father'.

Of particular interest for our current age of shortage of vocations to the priesthood is the information that at one time the parish of Warwick had no fewer than seven priests. A joke current at the time was that the younger priests fought one another for a side altar at which to celebrate daily Mass.

While delineating aspects of the characters of these twenty-five, Father Murphy Father Murphy is an American television drama series that aired on the NBC network from November 3, 1981 to September 18, 1983. Michael Landon created the series, was the executive producer, and also directed the show in partnership with William F.  also reveals qualities of the people of this vast diocese of Towoomba. He shows their strength of faith, their affection for their pastors, and their sacrifices for, and support given to, their pastors and their Faith.

This is a warm, inspirational book, well-written, well-planned, well-illustrated. It makes good reading for those interested in historical aspects of Church and society in the semi-outback districts of this vast continent in the 20th Century.
